What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is simply an artificial tooth root or “screw” that is placed into the jaw bone. A connector (abutment) then attaches the final crown to the implant.

Why do we place dental implants?

Dental implants are the best option to replace a missing tooth as a result of loss due to:

  • Extensive decay
  • Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Trauma
  • Congenitally missing teeth

When do we place implants?

  • To replace a single missing tooth
  • To support a bridge that replaces a missing tooth or teeth
  • To anchor a denture to achieve a better fit

What is involved in implant treatment?

A dental implant procedure typically includes the following steps and is treated in stages:

Initial implant visit:

  • A titanium implant or “screw” is placed in the jaw bone. (A bone graft may or may not be indicated at this stage to establish ideal retention of the implant)
  • The site is then covered back over with gum tissue for approximately 3 weeks to allow for proper healing

3 months later:

  • The implant site is uncovered
  • A dental impression (mold) is taken so it may be sent to a dental lab where the abutment (connector) and crown will be custom fabricated
  • The site is recovered with gum tissue

3 weeks later:

  • The final crown is fitted onto the implant using the custom abutment (connector) and is permanently cemented after patient and doctor approval

Can I afford dental implants?

Implants are surprisingly affordable today as compared to years past and have become common place procedures in the general office setting. SCVR offers financing options including 24 months with no interest payments to qualifying patients utilizing Care Credit. We also participate with many PPO insurance plans which result in contracted fee discounts for patients.
